Glenealy 1-8

Donard Glen 0-5

Ashford – 22/10/2011

Glenealy produced a confident display to dispatch Donard Glen and in the process seal their third trophy of the season at a rain soaked Ashford this afternoon writes Alan O’Brien.

The weather was particularly poor but that did not stop Glenealy and Donard Glen serving up a titanic battle for the Senior Camogie crown today. Laura Manley put the ladies from Glenealy into an early lead but Donard Glen fired over 0-2 from frees to push themselves in front.

In a closely contested first half a long ball fell to Patriece O’Gorman who broke onto the loose ball and fired a perfect ground stroke past the Donard stopper to put daylight between the teams. At half time Glenealy led by 1-3 to 0-4 with the wind behind Donard Glen for the second half.

Glenealy opened the scoring in the second half with Laura Manley keeping the scoreboard ticking over from dead balls. Donard were competing well and almost got a lifeline when a highball flew past the full back line and keeper but somehow Laura Manley cleared the ball over her head inside the square when running towards her own goal. The clearance was miraculous and spurred Glenealy on as they fired over 0-4 to Donard’s single point to win the Senior Championship and spark joyous celebrations.

County chairman David Murray presented Glenealy captain Vicky O’Gara with the trophy who called for three cheers….one for each cup they won this year!

Congratulations to Glenealy.

Wicklow League, Leinster League and Wicklow Senior Championship winners 2011!!

Fergus Nash reports on the Wicklow based All Ireland Winner if our Neighbours Wexford.

No Wicklow team played in Croke Park last Sunday in the various Camogie Finals, but one Wicklow woman sure did, Fergus Nash Reports.

Colleen Atkinson played a heroic match at corner back for the Wexford Intermediate team, marking a number of opponents so tightly that the Antrim management had to continuously devise new ways and new players to try and make an impression in their left corner forward position. Not only did she put in an excellent performance she was also the person to stand up on the podium and accept the Cup as captain of the team.

Atkinson, who married South Wicklow man Eugene Clune in April of this year, now calls Wicklow home, living near Woodenbridge. But her new affinity to Wicklow isn’t anything new having worked in Gardiner Grain in Carnew for the past six years.

However it is the Wexford Camogie team that she plays for and has been a constant figure on the Intermediate and Senior County squads since she was 18 years of age. Atkinson hails from the successful Oulart-the-Ballagh club and she made her senior club debut at the tender age of 13. Such is her wealth of talent and determination that she has never lost her senior place on the team except through injury.

When she tore her cruciate ligament in her knee she refused to take the easy option by gradually working herself back to full fitness by playing for the club’s Intermediate team, instead coming straight back into the senior squad and fighting for her place back on the team.

Colleen’s achievements read like any of our Gaelic superstars, such is the success that she has found on the field of play. From Feile na Gael medals to winning the club county championship on an almost yearly basis to three Senior medals from 2007, 2010 and 2011, along with her Intermediate medal from the weekend. Having two Leinster club championships in her back pocket it is only the All Ireland Club Championship that she and her special group of teammates covet at this stage. Oulart-the-Ballagh have already reached the County Final this year, showing that they are well on their way towards becoming the Queens of Camogie!

Going back to last Sunday’s match in Croke Park, Atkinson, who had her sister Karen showing a similar miserly streak in the left corner back position for the senior team, had to withstand a late Antrim onslaught in pursuit of the All Ireland. Her fellow players put their bodies on the line, chasing, blocking and hooking and foregoing their own instinctive attacking sense in aid of their team. All of this done with the orders flying in from their captain, Colleen Atkinson.

The players were happy for this to be the case too. Wexford manager, JJ Doyle, said earlier this year, “We let the girls choose the captain. Colleen was chosen. We are delighted for her as she has given so much to the team.”

Thus, Ms. Atkinson stood up in the Hogan Stand and accepted the trophy on behalf of her Wexford teammates just hours before her senior counterparts did the very same thing. She gave a wonderful speech, so much so that one lady beside me remarked, “Jeez, she’s well able to talk”, and finished, as I’ll finish in order to create some neighbourly harmony, with Loch Gorman Abú.

Match report from Wicklows All Ireland Final clash with Monaghan.

All Ireland Junior B Camogie Final

Monaghan 1-12 Wicklow 1-07

Wicklow traveled to Ashbourne on Sunday last to take on Monaghan in the All Ireland Final. The sides had already met twice in the group stages with a draw and a three point victory to Monaghan. This was expected to be a close encounter and the Monaghan got off to the better start with four points on the scoreboard before Laura Manley opened Wicklow’s account with a point from play. Playing against the strong wind and driving rain Wicklow had few scoring chances and Laura Manley added a point from play on the 19th minute. Monaghan who were attacking in waves added another three points before the break and Laura Manley clawed back a point with a free on the stroke of half time leaving the half time score 0-07 to 0-03. Wicklow felt they were well in the game at half time having played against the elements in the first half and Laura Manley added a point from a free in the opening minutes. Monaghan,s full forward tagged on a point and Laura Manley added to her tally with another point after 8 minutes. Monaghan then added four more points and were pulling away from Wicklow when Nicky Keddy in the Wicklow goal pulled off a great save to keep Wicklow’s hopes alive. Wicklow were only hanging in the game when Monaghan’s corner forward Nicola Morgan’s shot ended in the Wicklow net. Amanda Waters who tried hard added a point for Wicklow and Mary Whelan also pointed. A last minute goal from Sinead Byrne for WIcklow made the score line better looking for Wicklow but in truth the game was over at this time. Overall Wicklow will feel they didnt do themselves justice with too many players perfroming below par. While this may be true the fact that this time last year Wicklow were unable to field a team as interest was at an all time low, this squad of players have lifted Wicklow up from poor position and reached the All Ireland Final in their first year together, they must be proud of their achievements and look forward to next year with renewed anticipation. The Wicklow trainer Tara Warren can be immensely proud of the panel of girls and her own record. On the day when little went right for Wicklow Roisin Mulford, Mary O Neill, Nicky Keddy and Sheila Whelan and Laura Manley were Wickow,s top players.

Wicklow Team: Nicky Keddy, April Dickenson, Mary O Neill, Nora O Neill, Roisin Mulford, Teresa Keogh, Clair Whelan, Laura Manley, Karen Walsh, Claire Byrne, Sinead Byrne, Amanda Waters, Mary Whelan, Sheila Whelan, Kellie Byrne, Frances Kearns, Niamh Donnelly, Jessica Morrissey, Carol Murphy, Stephanie Rathray, Andrea Kealy, Linsey Quinlan
