WEST WICKLOW SCHOOLS ASTRO TURF FOOTBALL BLITZ

Valleymount N.S, Kilbride N.S, St Marys Senior N.S and Dunlavin N.S took part in a Go Games Astro Turf Football Blitz held in Blessington last Tuesday. All teams produced some excellent football and all enjoyed playing on the Astro turf pitch. The rules of the Blitz were modified with points only,no goalkeeper and 2 points given for points scored with the left foot. All players enjoyed the challenge of the Blitz and focused on using their weaker foot to avail of the extra point being offered for scoring with the weaker foot. All games were very close on the day with 2 draws in the group but after all games played Valleymount N.S topped the group. Many thanks to all the teachers who travelled to the Blitz with the teams and to the Blessington GAA club for the use of their pitch.

Col Chill Mhantain 0-7 Col Eoin Hacketstown 0-2

This match delivered the first silverware for new Wicklow school Colaiste Chill Mhantain on Thursday 26th in Carnew Emmets GAA grounds. Played in heavy conditions, the match was low scoring but fiercely competitive for the duration. Col Chill Mhantain led 0-2 to no score at half time against tough opposition from a spirited Col Eoin side. Daniel Staunton emerged from the goal after half time for the Wicklow Town school, and proved an influential force at half forward, sending over two fine scores and driving on the attack. Captain Warren Kavanagh was impressive at full back, while the Wicklow half back line of Sean O’ Callaghan, Cian Kelly and Conor Linnane put on an excellent display in the face of tremendous pressure from the Hacketstown attack. Aaron Nugent and Robin Mooney did trojan work at midfield, while Gavin Weir scored 0-3 at centre forward and was instrumental in his team’s victory, and Stephen Cruise and substitute George O’ Brien also impressed in the Wicklow school’s attack. Col Eoin continued to press hard and their goalkeeper made several outstanding saves but scores proved too difficult to come by for them at the other end where Cormac Geraghty also put in a fine performance between the posts in the second half for Chill Mhantain. In the end the day belonged to the Wicklow town school and Warren Kavanagh accepted the trophy from Dave Murray on behalf of the Leinster Council.

CCM: Daniel Staunton(0-2), James Manley, Warren Kavanagh, Ryan Devlin, Sean O’Callaghan, Cian Kelly, Conor Linnane, Aaron Nugent(0-1), Robin Mooney, David Dowling, Gavin Weir(0-3), Paul O’ Brien, Dean O’Gorman, Stephen Cruise(0-1), Jack Montgomery.

Subs used: Cormac Geraghty, George O’ Brien.

Peil Abu / Tag Gaelic Football exhibition for West Wicklow Clubs Starts next Wednesday

Peil Abu is the name given to recreational football starting next Wednesday 1st February in Blessington GAA Astro turf pitch between 9pm and 10pm. Peil Abu is a non contact type of tag Gaelic Football the new fun and social GAA initiative.

We are inviting all west Wicklow clubs to support this initiative. We would appeal to you all to come along next Wednesday where Baltinglass, Hollywood, Dunlavin and Blessington past Players will play this new GAA Recreational Game, Peil Abu. As part of the nationwide initiative by the GAA to increase GAA activity at club and community level. It is a great way to stay fit and healthy as it is a very active game. This results in lots of movement, turnovers and excitement. The rules are quite simple. Physical contact is not allowed. It’s basically Gaelic Football but once players are tagged, they must turn over possession. Scores, solo-running, hand passing and the pick-up can be altered to better suit the needs of the players. It’s also a fantastic way of working up a sweat!

Please come along and see for yourself. It is open to everyone, club and non club members. Any Club interested in getting involved in the Peil Abu games in the future can contact Paul Garrigan at paul.garrigan.gda.wicklow@gaa.ie phone 083-4366801

Come along and see the Stars of the past – Playing in the Future

________________________________________________

Teams can be mixed of both men and women. And better still you don’t even have had to play GAA before. The big thing for us is the enjoyment levels you can even be a total beginner and once you play – you can’t wait to go again!”

Transition Year students from Blessington CC, St Kevins Dunlavin and Scoil Chonglais Baltinglass recently took part in a new recreational game devised by the GAA called Peil Abú . Peil Abú is the name of a Social and Recreational game which was launched at this years GAA congress in Mullingar. The game was devised by the National Research Committee on foot of extensive trials which took place in Waterford I.T Sports Campus. The big difference between Peil Abú and Gaelic Football is that players wear tags and a player who is tagged (caught in possession) has to hand over possession of the ball to the opposition. New footballs – a different one for indoors and outdoors – have also been developed for the game. Teams can be made up of male and female players on the basis that each team has an equal number of female players on the field at the same time. Players (apart from Peil Abú are organised within a Post-Primary School) should be over 16 years of age and participate at their own risk. There was a very positive response from all the students who derived a great sense of achievement, fun and enjoyment from their involvement in this new game. Many thanks to all the students who participated and to all the transition year teachers who helped with the organisation of these blitzes. If a Club, College or Company is interested to getting involved in Peile Abú to have a bit of fun or to get fit after Christmas you can contact Paul Garrigan Wicklow GDA at paul.garrigan.gda.wicklow@gaa.ie
