Bray Emmets GAA Club Notes

Club Lotto The Bray Emmet’s Club Lotto will be launched next Tuesday 7th February at 8PM in the Martello on Bray Sea Front. It will be a little different from the old traditional lotto and we would like to invite all Club Officers, committee members, team mentors and members to attend the launch. It is 9 years since we had club lotto and we hope to make this a permanent fixture. So please, join the other members at the launch on Tuesday next, February 7th in the Martello, and help us spread the word.

Handball For anyone interested in playing handball Conor Brittan of Wicklow VEC will be running a handball session at St Thomas’ in Bray on Tuesday evening from 6pm – 7pm in the sports hall. There is no charge and anyone aged 10 years and over can attend.

Recycling Following the success of our clothes recycling days we will be holding another one in June. We would ask that you hold onto suitable items for recycling and details on a date and time will be available in due course.

Juvenile Match Reports

U11 Match Report The under 11s welcomed Foxrock Geraldines to Bray for a football match on Saturday 28th January, conditions were ideal with no wind (a contrast to the gales they played in the week before). The teams played 14 aside with Bray adapting well to the tighter spaces. Gavin Henderson and Jamie Baguley worked tirelessly up and down the pitch. Aaron Graham used his height well, making several assured catches from high balls. Michael Timmons in defence ensured that the Foxrock had very little time on the ball. Conor Dowling frequently turned defence into attack with long accurate clearing kicks from the back to his forwards. The final score 4-8 to 1-9 in Bray’s favour reflected the overall team performance and the progress the lads are making.

Táimid ag traenáil arís ar an Déardaoin, 2 Feabhra ag 7pm i bPáirc Emmet Bhré.

Emmet Bhré : Aaron Graham, Adam Temple 0-1, Conor Dowling 0-1, Conor Hardiman, Darragh McCormack, David Maloney 1-3, David Nesbitt 0-1, Gavin Henderson 2-1, Jamie Baguley 1-0, Michael Timmons, Nick Hederman, Oisín Carney, Rian Knox 0-1, Rory Lambe, Seán McDonagh.

U12Bray Emmets vs Foxrock/Geraldines The U12s got the 2012 season underway with a 2 game friendly vs Foxrock/Geraldines in Old Conna on Saturday. Despite missing several players the teams put up a very good show.

On pitch 1 Bray Emmets played a fast kicking game that Foxrock/Geraldines never got to grips with. Bray scored a goal in the first couple of minutes and never looked back from there. It really was a team performance with every player contributing to the win. The final scoreline was Bray Emmets 7-11 Foxrock Geraldines 4-2.

Team was as follows

Macdara Ó Midheach , Patrick Emms, Ronan McMahon, Ciaran McKay, Lochlann Dougan, Andrew Conway, Joe Phelan, Darragh Rochford, David Maloney.

The match on pitch 2 was a much closer affair where after a ding dong battle Bray lost out by a single point. Special mention must go the the U11 players in the game who played less than half an hour after an U11 match against the same opposition.

Team as follows

Nick Hederman, Sean MacGabhann, Gavin Henderson, Conor Hardimann, Mathew Dehanschutter, Jacob Stanley, Jack Maguire, Sean McDonagh, Gavin Rochford.

DINNER DANCE Just a reminder that tickets for the Dinner Dance are on sale and hot cakes are trailing in the disposal stakes. So if you do not wish to suffer the disappointment of not being part of this wonderful social occasion you had better purchase your ticket promptly. Available from Sharon Hughes 086-8583415, Carmel Deeney 086-1621651, Anto Byrne 087-8188871.

HURLING NEWS The cold war is over. A non-aggression treaty has been signed. Things have even gone further and a Senior Hurling free-trade area comprising the parishes of Kilcoole and Greystones has been created. As a result the clubs will be entering a combined team to compete for the O’Donoghue Trophy in 2012.

The Cathaoirleach of the juvenile coiste, Colm Dorgan, informs me that training for the underage hurlers will be beginning shortly. He expressed himself a little disappointed at the difficulty in recruiting adults to pass on the skills of the game – the harvest is great but the labourers are few. As it stands at present, he said, he has fears for the indoor Academy which caters for children from 6-8 years. This Acadamh has heretofore been a great success and was hugely enjoyed by its young participants so it would be a shame if it had to go. The commitment involved in its running is minimal. It is scheduled for 1 hour per week, 6.30pm to 7.30pm on Mondays and, since the players are not involved in outside competitions, there are no team management duties.

You would like to help in the promotion of this unique and wonderful game? Don’t allow a lack of coaching experience discourage you from becoming involved. Our hurling enthusiasts will be only too pleased to help you acquire the required skills and confidence.

A propos: on Jan 18th on the John Murray show a PE teacher from Norway, Ivan Dahl (relation of Roald?!) described as an evangelist of the camán, spoke of his work in promoting hurling in Europe. He told us how during his Easter holidays in Ireland in 1995 he had seen hurling on the TV in a pub and was immediately impressed “I had never seen a game with so many skills”. Ivan decided there and then that he would introduce it into his PE classes as soon as he had the chance. The opportunity arose when he moved to Toulouse. The Dept of Education in France allows non-language teachers to teach their subject through a foreign language so he teaches the hurling through English for 2 hours per week.

Last year he initiated a European-wide project to propagate the game and he has succeeded in getting schools from 3 other countries involved – Denmark, Norway and UK. He is bringing 4 teams to Ratoath from 13th -16th March to participate in a hurling school.

Significantly, one of the things he mentioned was that neither the children nor their teachers had ever previously heard of the game. Not altogether surprising when we, as a nation, do so little to promote our games abroad and many within the country dismiss them as not worthy of their consideration. Tourism Ireland asserts that what attracts people to Ireland are those aspects of the country and its people which afford them a different experience. In its brochures it promotes the physical residues of our past but it doesn’t see Páirc an Chrócaigh and its heritage of our unique and vibrant Gaelic games as worthy of being brought to the attention of visitors. These sports are truly reflective of what has any claim to uniqueness in the Irish psyche and of which we can be justly proud. Surely then, these games are as worthy of promotion as Georgian buildings or Blarney stones.

A little research by the Board would demonstrate that most open-minded visitors with an interest in sport are truly entranced by hurling and camogie.
