Years of hurt and disappointment were a distant memory as Mickos youthful Wicklow side instilled a new found pride in the Wicklow Jersey with sensational 1-15 to 0-17 victory over 5 time All Ireland winners Down in Aughrim.

When the dust settles on the first round win it seems all the more impressive. Wicklow were good but nowhere near great. James Stafford, Thomas Walsh, Leighton Glynn and Seanie Furlong were good, but not great. The optimism is based on the knowledge that these players have the capacity to perform twice as good as they did against Longford….they have the capacity to be great.

Wicklow lost out to rivals Sligo by the narrowest of margins in the final round of the National League at a sun kissed County Grounds on Saturday afternoon. After a heavy defeat in the minor game the crowd were in need of a lift and while the result wasdisappointing in the end, Wicklow displayed fight, guts and character that had been missing in defeat to Carlow.
