A walk down the Ardfinnan way....

Sure ya can’t go to Clonmel…the home of the ‘ol Bulmers and not sample the local produce!  Well that was my train of thought anyway when I rolled into Clonmel the day before the Wickla and Tipp match in Ardfinnan.  What a plan we had..beer, football and craic.  Obviously those who hatched the plan didn’t spare a thought for the passengers in Jiggy’s car when they nominated him to drive!  The rumour still has it that he got the drivers licence in a kinder surprise!!

But sure we got there in one piece and the games began….pints were followed by pints and thats when the fun started!!  Waking with a pain in my head that could kill a small elephant I struggled into the Wicklow jersey and my thoughts switched to the game ahead…the pre-game banter was flying over breakfast when Ger’s phone rang..
the old man was on telling him that the pitch in Ardfinnan had been vandalised…According the Mr. Bob Hughes, the game has been switched to Aughrim!

Now I know that this should ring a couple of bells but when your still half cut and just about awake…theses feckers can be quiet convincing…Anyways I decided to take matters into my own hands…I was not going to miss the match!!  So straight into the local newsagents I went to see did the locals know about this “Vandalism” on the Ardfinnan pitch!!  No joy there though…so I rang the mother, need the number for East Coast Fm…they would know!  But I only had the competition line and I wasn’t caller number nine so I didn’t get through!  Frustrated I watched the lads pack the cars and get ready to go home!!

Hang on…I said!!  If there is one person that would know its the Garda!  Sure it would have been reported to them…so off to the station I set..determined that I would get to the bottom of this…adrenaline running wild at the adventure…the conversation was interesting!!  There was some guy who was bound to the peace ahead of me at the hatch signing on but the Garda beckoned me forward….and it went a little like this!

“Can I help you son”
“Eh yeah..could ya tell me if the pitch in Ardfinnan was vandalised…..”
“What?  You want to report the pitch has been vandalised???”
“No…Jaysus no, We heard the pitch was vandalised and Wicklow are supposed to play Tipp today..We think it has been switched back to Wicklow but
want to make sure before we set off!”
(Funny look from the bound to the peace guy!!)
“And why young man would they switch it back to Wicklow…sure we have loads of pitchs here….and how would you vandalise a pitch???”
“How would you vandalise a pitch???  Duh!!!!  With a plough obviously!!!” I replied
The garda rolled his eyes so I turned on my heel…Deflated and defeated I made my way back out to the lads…
“That fecker knows nothing either…this town I dunno!!!”

And with that the lads fell to ground like they were shot in the head with laughing bullets….looking back, how was I to know it was April Fools day…
